30 Day writing challenge - #1 A mysterious letter
Renée was lost in thought as she made her way along the wet, grey footpath, not bothering to look if anyone was walking towards her. She didn’t notice as the umbrella she was holding tilted to the side allowing the water to drip onto her raven black hair. She didn’t notice as an envelope was discreetly put into the side pocket of her bag. The blinding headlights of a car shone directly onto her face followed by incessant honking which was more than enough to snap Renée out of her trance-like state. Her wide eyes returned to their normal size in a split-second as she took a deep breath and crossed the road, shaking her head at herself.
Unlocking the door, she walked past the brown shoe-stand that occupied more space than necessary and plonked herself onto the sofa with an exhausted sigh. Her apartment wasn’t that big, but good enough for her salary; good enough for her to get by. After a good, hot shower and about half an hour of procrastinating dinner, she decided on cup noodles. Settling onto the bed she opened the grey laptop, staring intently at the contents displayed on the blue screen. While absent-mindedly reaching for her charger, she tipped over the bag and something else fell out. She blinked at in surprise because she didn’t remember putting it there...or owning such fancy paper. Renée’s hand twitched hesitantly before bending down to pick it up. Well, it wasn’t like touching it could do any harm, right? She examined the eye-catching red stamp curiously, trying to make out the patterns that danced across it. She held it to the light to get a closer look when she saw the mark. She opened the envelope hastily, making sure not to tear it. Her wide eyes scanned the contents as her jaw slackened. She shakily dialled the one number she had never called before, eyes scanning the letters over and over again.
