Today, Martyrs' Day here in the country of Panama, is a day of national mourning to commemorate the lives lost of young Panamenian men and women who rioted against the Americans on January 9, 1964 over sovereignty of the Panama Canal Zone. The tragedy started shortly after Panamenian students took a Panamenian flag to out it on the other side of the fence that back then covered the entire area of the Canal.
It is sad indeed that such event happened. Many people lost their lives that day. But this day reminds us of the years of fight for the Canal we have now today, and how many people fought for it to be given to us Panamenians and that area too, for it is part of our land. This day is to remember that fighting.
