BEETLEBUMPS

i just saw the statement the creator of Heated Rivalry put out, and as a woman who dreams of working in film and TV in the near future, it genuinely frustrated me. the industry is already overwhelmingly male-dominated, and creating, writing, and producing stories that center women is difficult enough without having those efforts dismissed or sidestepped entirely. so hearing a man claim that a male-centered show is feminist simply because women were removed from the narrative feels deeply misguided.

if the problem is how women are written, then the answer isn’t to erase them, it’s to do better by them. there is always the option to create thoughtful, complex stories about women that don’t fall into the same tired pitfalls people complain about. choosing not to take that route, and instead focusing entirely on men, then framing that choice as progressive or pro-women feels disingenuous at best.

it’s not feminism to exclude women from the narrative altogether. it doesn’t challenge the industry, it doesn’t uplift women, and it certainly doesn’t push storytelling forward. rather than fighting for better representation or creating richer stories for women, it feels like they’ve simply opted out and somehow tried to pass that off as progress.

to be clear, i haven’t personally watched the show yet, so i can’t speak on how its LGBTQ+ themes are handled. but i do think it would have been far better and far more honest if the creator had simply framed the series as a new outlet for LGBTQ audiences, rather than dragging women into the conversation at all. especially when the justification seems to hinge on the show having a large female fanbase, which is a whole other issue in itself.

i haven’t watched the show either but i read the statement and you’re so right. when he said that “there’s a safety in seeing a woman being removed from the conversation” i literally rolled my eyes bcs he’s suggesting that that women are to blame for the violence they face, and that domestic abuse somehow disappears when women are taken out of the narrative. like bffr

i’m bursting with new apply fic ideas right now, but what do you guys think of a superhero apply fic set in a university for supes? it’s heavily inspired by Gen V and The Boys Universe + the DCU

psxchopomp-

Also- if you do like those two shows I HIGHLY recommend Supacell if you haven’t seen it!!

i’m not condoning any type of crime whatsoever, but robbing The Louvre in seven minutes under broad daylight is so ridiculously chic i can’t even be mad. the concept of them forming a crew to go on an art heist AND getting away with it by riding on fucking scooters makes this whole situation feel like a literal fever dream. this news has bee FRYING me since yesterday i honestly gotta respect the hustle

obviously burglary is still a serious offense, even more so since they stole legitimate historical artifacts. but i think the reason people aren’t taking this too seriously is because there are way bigger issues and actual crimes against humanity happening right now that deserve more media attention and outrage.

i’m honestly so glad more people are getting into the DCU again thanks to James Gunn’s recent projects. i still remember barely surviving the trenches when the MCU completely dominated everything and people were constantly dragging DC for even existing (i honestly blame Zack Snyder for that). but seeing people finally appreciate DC the way it deserves now makes me so happy <3 i might rewatch Young Justice and Smallville soon because the nostalgia is hitting hard lately.

@BEETLEBUMPS right!! im a new dc fan myself, but im SO glad i finally got into it after Superman!! after reading the comics for both, i must admit i do enjoy reading DC stuff more. im really looking forward to the DCU, but i'm yet to get into more films and tv shows (currently watching peacemaker hehe)

[ @velocityalt ] i was totally guilty of hating on my faves’ rivals when i was a teenager too, so it’s all good haha! but if Superman was your first entry into the DCU and you’re looking for stuff that ties into James Gunn’s new canon, i’d recommend starting with The Suicide Squad (2021), then watching Peacemaker season 1. from there, go for Blue Beetle (2023), Creature Commandos, and then Peacemaker season 2 now that it’s out. there’s still a lot more planned for the new DCU, but for now we’ll just have to wait for the upcoming releases.

personally, Smallville was my intro to the DCU. it mainly focuses on Clark Kent’s story before he became Superman and isn’t canon to Gunn’s universe, though Gunn did draw some inspiration from it for the new Superman film. i also really loved Young Justice (2010). it unfortunately got cancelled a few years ago, but the existing seasons are still amazing if you want to see younger heroes outside of the Justice League as the main characters.

these are all just the shows and movies though. the comics are a whole other league!
