The Husband She Chose
Anna’s heart stammered. This place was hers. This loft. This hay. Her only hiding place for months.
“I’m sorry, sir. You’re in my place.” Anna lifted her chin.
A pause.
The man continued staring at her, confusion flickering in his eyes. “This… loft?”
“Well, yes.” Anna pointed to where he sat. “That’s my hay. I stacked it.”
He blinked, straightened his back, and glanced over his shoulder. “This… hay?”
“Yes.”
His gaze returned to her.
They exchanged a stare before he said carefully, “I think we have a misunderstanding, Miss—”
“Anna.”
Anna held his gaze. She wouldn’t give up so easily.
The corner of his lips twitched. “Miss Anna. I’ve got permission from Mr. Thornton to use this loft… including the hay.” His pencil finally lowered to the page.
