EDITED ENDING for Chapter 4:
"This is what we put up with…" she finally said.
Grandma Chioma’s words trailed off. Slowly, she rests her hand on the Bible. She grabbed the book and placed it on the side of her waist. Grandma Chioma raised that Bible, her fingers pressing firmly against the cover. "I know we will get through this because God has this handled, for He is my witness!"
A God who witnessed nights of me waking up in sweat, my knees aching in prayer, my cry for help, and my stupidity for thinking such things. The thing is, confessing the truth is not worthy of my time at this moment. Honestly, I don’t want to argue with her. There’s gotta be a better day where I’ll spill the beans–to her and Dad included. I ain’t religious, but I know I can still have morals without religion. I gotta hope they’ll understand and not try to proselytize me. Who am I kidding?
“Goodnight,” she said.
Man, I got too caught up in my thoughts. She had finished preaching by now.
“All right,” I nodded at her. “Goodnight.”
