I prefer plain writing to ornate language or pyrotechnics.  Writers who have affected me include Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, Albert Camus, Ken Kesey, Joseph Heller, Kurt Vonnegut, and Terry Southern.  One exception to the above:  I like The Bear by William Faulkner.  So it is okay to use long sentences if you are writing about hunting dogs.
