I've had an epiphany regarding making Y/n(s) the older brother of Dustin. And rereading my Harry Hook fic. It essentially defaults Y/n to being white which was not something I was thinking about previously. The problem stems from the idea of white/Caucasian being the "default" which is dominant in the fan-fiction space. I was following by their example and not thinking about the way I was writing my reader & Y/ns. I am literally Latino... High key upset at myself for this as I was just writing the way I was reading on here. I will do my best to improve on this including:
. ݁ ˖ » Avoiding using description of Y/n's face turning red as not everyone's face turns red because, hello? Skin color.
. ݁ ˖ » Descriptions of hair.
. ݁ ˖ » Descriptions of the body (not including injuries)
. ݁ ˖ » Height compared to other characters
It will take time to perfect it, but it is very important to me that everyone feels welcome here when searching for a little something. I want to create a space for you as the reader to feel comfortable and not constantly being reminded that you "aren't the normal". Because you ARE normal you are human. The world sucks rn for POC and I don't want to add to that.
Let me know if there is anything I can do to adapt and make this a comfortable experience! Hasta luego! Ciao.
