Credited with inventing the Tremblement de Terre, an extraordinarily strong cocktail consisting of 3 parts absinthe and 3 parts cognac, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec is said to have enjoyed the drink served in a wine goblet. The name – which translates to “Earthquake” – may be a reference to its startling effects on the imbiber’s body.

Based on Claude Monet’s letters, curators imagine he was a little impatient and “cranky” as a traveler. He was used to his routine (he famously ate at the same time every day) and liked to be at home with his family. Still, no other artist of his time traveled as much. He had an adventurous spirit and great desire to explore new imagery and new motifs.

White is not the “white” you might expect. Instead, the white areas in some watercolour paintings are achieved by leaving the paper untouched, allowing its natural colour to show through. This technique, known as negative painting, enables artists to create very intricate details. Some people are quite snobby and look down on painters who choose not to use this technique. Find out what works best for you and just do it. No need for others to dictate how you want to paint.

Yayoi Kusuma is both fascinated and repulsed by sex and considers herself asexual. Her fear of sex began when her mother repeatedly sent her to spy on her serially philandering father. Her obsession with the male anatomy is manifest in works such as her famed Accumulation No. 1. (1962), a bulky white chair covered in stuffed phallus shapes.
