I need some advice on something. So, the original story I have on here, Tides of Fate, I shared some of it with my creative writing class. Now, just as a reminder, the story is about a selkie named Elliot, who meets a supernatural researcher named Ivan at a library in a remote fishing village in northern Russia. Elliot had his pelt on the back of his chair, and Ivan accidentally bumped into it when he walked by and knocked it to the floor. Ivan picked it up and gave it back.
And in my story, giving a selkie back their pelt without ever trying to steal it is equivalent to a marriage proposal.
Now, in real selkie mythology, no such custom exists.
And that’s where the problem lies. I shared this story with my friend, and they gave me some good advice, like how making up stuff for a mythological creature may not be the best idea/be considered spreading misinformation. Which is not my intention. At all.
I don’t know if selkies are different from other mythological creatures, but as my story is a fantasy, I thought it was okay to make up some things to fit the vision I had for my story, but now I feel awful about it because of what my friend said and feel like I need to completely rewrite the story.
So, like, what do I do? I shared the story because I was proud of it, but now just I feel bad about it.
