He didn’t pull his hand away this time.
Instead, his thumb brushed a small, absent circle against her shoulder — a grounding habit he’d picked up without realising it.
“Nothing’s wrong,” he said quietly. “Not yet.”
He shifted so he was standing in front of her now, blocking out the city with his frame, blue eyes searching her face like he was trying to memorise it.
“I just…” He hesitated, the word rare and heavy coming from him. “I’ve been seeing patterns in your field signatures. Tiny fluctuations. The kind most people would ignore.”
A breath.
“But you’re not ‘most people’ to me.”
His voice softened further, almost a whisper lost in the wind “you smile. You laugh. You save everyone like it’s easy. And I keep thinking — one day you won’t come back from it, and I won’t even see it coming.”
He swallowed, then managed a small, crooked smile for her.
“So if I’m worrying too much, tell me. But don’t ever think I’m watching you because I doubt you.”
His hand squeezed her shoulder gently.
“I’m watching you because I love you.”
