I hate weak female characters and I'm beginning to grow quite tired of Wattpad stories that romanticize abuse; excuse abusive behavior as having been caused by a troubled past or mental illness; and have the main female character stay with her abuser because "I can change him/ I have faith in him/ I love him/ It's fate." What is the purpose of creating a character with no self-respect or esteem? The only reason I can come up with is to show how much pain and humiliation a woman can endure before her abuser has an unrealistic epiphany and changes his ways; this does not happen. As I get older and read and reread many of the stories I once thought I enjoyed, I've come to realize how difficult it is to find a female character- and a lead one at that- who actually doesn't crumble at the feet of her supposed lover/mate/partner when they do something horrible but then suddenly forgives them for exhibiting one minor act of kindness or remorse.
