Daredevil Boston socialite Violet Callahan finds freedom in flying by risking her life barnstorming and completing suicidal dive bombs and double barrel rolls in her 1920s bi-plane.  When suddenly in a summer storm in 1922, Violet meets handsome Prohibition agent Jack Moran. Jack is instantly smitten with Violet, but independent Violet leaves Jack and flies away.  Over the next three years, Jack follows Violet in her aviation career and is horrified at the risks that she takes.  Three years later Violet has evolved into a freethinking, smoking, and very avant garde woman of the 1920s; everything that Jack is not.  Finally when the couple reunites in Hilton Head at a speakeasy Violet will follow Jack into murder, a federal trial involving a Southern mob ring, and life on the run.
