BOOK PREVIEW (I don't have a title yet)

The school has a different feel to it. Instead of having that happy vibe, with seniors drinking coffee and gossiping outside their lockers, and a clump of volleyball girls giggling as they walk down the hallway, as soon as I enter it, it feels horrible. That gut-wrenching feeling when you’re the only one who doesn’t understand the homework, the feeling you get when you get called by the principal or you enter a room and see your ex flirting with another girl.
That feeling.
Alice and I walk down the hallways, our footsteps ringing in my ears. A senior girl drops her coffee cup right after a football boy says something. I know what she was just told. Coffee runs from the lip of the cup, creating a stream of caffeine. I step over it.
There’s crying heard at the end of the hallway, as a short girl with mousy brown hair gets pulled by the guidance counselor into her office. The girl is Ema. She was Vivi’s best friend in the whole world.
Alice grasps my hand protectively as we pass by the senior hallway. Normally, I would never let her do that, since we are in high school after all. But now, I don’t care.
“Hey look, a couple of lesbians.” A junior boy says, his friends laughing along with him. We shuffle past even quicker, almost sprinting upstairs to the freshman hallway. We stop by my locker. Alice looks at me for a bit before speaking. “I… I’ll be here… if-if you need. I know that Vivi was one of your best friends… she was a good friend of mine, but you and her were…”
Alice stops and holds her right hand, crossing her fingers. She gives a sad smile. “Like this…”
