Costa Rica is an interesting country, y'all--very touristy. We're in a National Park right now, Arenal National Park in English, which has both a rainforest and a jungle. It rains on and off here all the time, but the biodiversity is something else. I want to try ziplining, but I don't want to be the only one to do it--LOL!--since I've never done it before. I finally took some time aside to edit Claxton a little more, and I plan to return with The Curse of Poseidon and The Prince of Almia when I return home.

I hope everyone had a great holiday!

@RachWriters it’s on and off rain and around 70-75 degrees. It’s a rainforest, though, so expected. We saw some Capuchin Monkeys walking across a power line.

After 24 hours with kidney stones, I finally made it to Costa Rica! Worst 24 hours of my life, but we’re here, and I can catch up on my book club assignment today and tomorrow. :)

20 more chapters to edit for Claxton, y'all, and then I'm going to start putting together my query letter. My friend, who's getting published in March, is going to help me review and revise it before I send it off. I saw an option for just regular fantasy, so that's what I'm going to go for. My friend also mentioned another resource for me in case this one doesn't work out.

Awesome! I've been looking at a few debut epic fantasy novels and have been checking their word counts. I see a few that are over the 90,000-120,000 word count for debut fantasy writers, so I am okay with a word count of 160,000. I cannot dumb it down to 120,000 without losing a huge portion of the plot. You can do this, Victoria. You can do this.

CSBenson

@CroodsGirl YA tends to be shorter, but a quickly-paced epic fantasy might hold the younger crowd's attention. Once I get through the slog of getting Bad Decisions into print, I'll be sure to check it out!

@CSBenson Claxton isn’t adult fantasy, though. It’s a young adult epic fantasy with elements of romantasy and portal fantasy. Despite its word count, though, the book moves quickly because I've tightened everything with editing and have taken out unnecessary descriptions.

@CroodsGirl My debut novel, Rose of Sorrows, on Amazon clocks in at almost 193k words and 451 pages (6x9). For adult epic grimdark fantasy, word counts of 120k or more isn't unusual.

I've finished with the first twenty chapters of Claxton, y'all, and am now getting into the chapters where I can speed up the process. It's almost there--almost sounding like the Curse of Poseidon. I'm mainly focusing on excess description and still the occasional show-don't-tell, unless it's important for the story's lore. I'm probably not going to work on the fanfic again until after the holidays, but I'm still hoping to pump out one more chapter for The Curse of Poseidon.

This story is legit nothing like it was in 9th grade anymore—LOL! Pretty much the only thing that is the same is Makenna and Tracey, but the plot has been changed and expanded. I think Claxton can pass as Epic Fantasy, with hints of Para-Romantasy and Portal Fantasy. Maybe I can let it slide as Epic Fantasy. We'll see when I begin querying next year.

Love you all, and may the Force be with you!

EXCITING NEWS!

I’m going to begin querying Claxton next year! My friend said her agent is looking for Fantasy books next year and is willing to help me with the query letter. Just one person can make a huge difference, guys. My friend just sent me the form. I’m nervous and not expecting to get anything, but at least my friend is helping me.

Time to dial down on this last round of editing!
