Hey everyone,

How’s it going? If you followed my anthology of short stories inspired by songs, “Words and Music,” you may recall a story titled “Heartbreak Girl.” It first existed as teen fiction, but over time and after a bit of editing, it shed its adolescent skin a few years ago and became something more reflective of where I am as a writer and person. In that reorientation, I met Johnny and Jolene, two elderly characters who embody the kind of aged, enduring love that I’m drawn to.

Some characters simply don’t leave us. Johnny and Jolenes linger still in the archive of my mind. So I wrote something short and sudden for a writing group I’m part of (Datura Community on Wattpad, check them out) as a Valentine’s Day challenge.

Through a letter that’s not meant to be sent and a question that has no answer, this is a meditation on the persistence of affection. If you’d like to read it, it’s on my newsletter: https://open.substack.com/pub/maddyogenesclub/p/amorphous

I send out short fiction, reflective reviews, and occasional essays. If you’re partial to that sort of thing, consider subscribing.

Thank you for reading. Happy Valentine’s. I hope you find a bit of love wherever you are, in yourself and in others. And that you keep it.

          	All the love,

Hi, I recently came across your work and really connected with your writing style. I tried reaching out privately but couldn’t, so I thought to leave a message here. I’d love to connect with you if you’re open to it.

@RebaNellMcEntireMana Thank you for saying that. I'm fascinated, and admire, life-long friendships, but it's an elusive concept for many people, myself included. This is a making sense of it, if you will.

@indig0jesse My pleasure. You had me at "A Man Called Ove," and then the pairing of "Normal People" and "The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn," which is an interesting trifecta. I'm intrigued. I look forward to reading it, and your ONC, once I have some free time. Good luck with the contest! <3

Hey everyone,

Happy New Year! It’s a clean slate, and I’m starting the year off a little ambitious.

As I mentioned in the previous note, I'm exploring other directions for my writing, one of which is TB,RTTS into a debut novel. In line with that exploration, and this shift has been a long time coming, but I’m only now able to articulate it—Wattpad will be taking a backseat (at least until a change of heart).

I know I’m not exactly an active presence around here, but my writing projects have always been intended for this platform. That’s not the case anymore, which is to say, I’m taking my writing a little more seriously.

I need a space for that transition and change, which is why I have started a Substack newsletter, where I hope to take that seriousness as opposed to the experimentation ground that Wattpad has been for me. I think Substack is somewhere I can approach with greater intention and intimacy, and it’s a small part of my larger pursuit, i.e., the debut novel.

New year, new me, I guess. I hope you will continue supporting me on this journey. I'd love for you to come along, because your presence means more than you know—it’s a spirit that keeps me writing, and chase that dream:

Hey everyone!

I know I'm quite inactive here lately, but rest assured, I've been very much active with writing. These days, I'm pouring all my energy and time into writing my hopeful debut, but I realise "IK, TIAS" is awaiting updates on Wattpad. Honestly, I'm unsure if and when that'll be, or if ever, but the story isn't forgotten—I have ideas for it, and I'm also exploring other directions for my writing journey overall. News to come!

On a brighter note, the collaborative project from "The Great Hall" Harry Potter community, "Howling Among Friends," has a brand-new update awaiting your return!

Presenting Chapter 10: Tidings of Good and Grim (written by yours truly):
          https://www.wattpad.com/791479543-howling-among-friends-chapter-ten-tidings-of-good

This chapter is set around Christmas and features some miracles—there's excitement, tension, foreboding, and good graces. It's a rather long chapter, but I hope it's fun to read. Please do read, vote, and share your thoughts, and if you're in the mood, let me know what sequences you enjoyed the most!

This chapter marks the end of my journey with HAF, and with it, the doors of The Great Hall come to a real closure for me. Writing Sirius and delving into his mindset has been more than just fun—this journey has been a sort of life imitating art more so than art imitating life; I've felt joy, heartache, laughter, and hope. Thank you for reading, supporting, and sharing this adventure. Just two more chapters remain until the end!

But for me, I guess that goes without saying...

          Mischief Managed.

          All the love,
          Mads

Hey everyone!

It's been a while since my last update.

FIRSTLY, the collaborative project from "The Great Hall" Harry Potter community, titled "Howling Among Friends," is back from on-hold status! Yay!

          Presenting Chapter 9: A Staggering Prank: https://www.wattpad.com/791479485-howling-among-friends-chapter-nine-a-staggering

This chapter is chock-full of humour, excitement, determination, and liberation! And let me tell you a secret—it's co-written by three people, all at once! Please do read, vote, and share your thoughts, and if you're up for a challenge, see if you can guess which section of the chapter is written by yours truly.

This chapter begins Act 3, aka the final part, so we are in the home stretch now! How exciting!

SECONDLY, for the readers awaiting "In Knowing, There Is A Sun," there has been a change of plan. The updates will be delayed, as I have put the writing of this book temporarily on hold. I'm working on the second half of its outline, which needs some work before I can continue writing. While I do not have a set timeline, "IK, TIAS" will be updated on Wattpad.

These days, I'm focusing my full attention on writing my hopeful debut. I haven't been active in several months, but if you're interested, I plan to share updates about my progress on my IG @maddyalson (link in bio for convenience), where I share all things writing and reading as well.

Thank you so much for the support! Words cannot express enough.

          All the love,
          Mads

Hey everyone,

          Personal Announcement! ✨

My last-minute #ONC2025 novella (In Knowing, There Is A Sun) qualified for Round 2 (Yay!) — however, I decided not to submit it for further competition. I ran out of steam and didn't want to burn myself out by forcing myself to churn out words. I'm happy to be a Round 1 Qualifier out of the reported 900+ submissions and for the opportunity to experiment with a new genre. I'm enjoying writing and imagining this fantastical world, and I hope to share updates with you soon. The plan is to complete the book offline and resume updating it by mid-year. *fingers crossed*

Thank you so much to all those who read (or hope to read) and added the book to their reading lists! I really appreciate it. Good luck to all ONCers! Keep writing!

Hey everyone!

I caught that spine-tingling fever going around this time of year, and I found it hard to resist myself, so I got myself into a tight spot with time crunch — I am taking part in #ONC2025.

          https://www.wattpad.com/story/390511906-in-knowing-there-is-a-sun

"In Knowing, There Is A Sun" will be the first-ever long-form fantasy I'm writing, continuing my unofficial tradition of trying new genres for ONC entries, and as with all my Wattpad works, yet another experimental project where I try out new things.

I was inspired by prompt 39. This novella will be something of a "psychological-fantasy," if you will, that plays with themes of, but not limited to, occult, identity, isolation and brotherhood.

I'm excited to write, and I hope you will enjoy reading! Don't hesitate to vote and/or comment to let me know your thoughts.

Are you joining #ONC2025? What prompts inspired you? Feel free to drop your titles under this post; I'd love to check them out when I can.

Hey everyone!

I have a new short story up, written for @esthetiquecommunity Monthly Writing Contest (January 2025). Here’s the synopsis:

A middle-aged art forger is confronted by an enigmatic presence in the afterlife and employed to spread a conspiracy. Dead but still working—just his luck! But as he sinks into this afterlife of workaholism, the boundaries between life, death, and legacy blur with the surreal.

          https://www.wattpad.com/story/389377042-dead-but-still-working

This is a sort of experimental work that interplays between absurdist elements and the errie atmosphere of gothic fiction against the backdrop of art and death. I hope you enjoy reading it! And I'd love to hear your thoughts.

If you're on Instagram, I'm active at @maddyalson (the IG is linked to this Wattpad profile, too), where I hope to share all things writing and reading-based. Feel free to drop your IG username under this post so I know who's who and can follow you back.
