HEGINS, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) -- A rampant problem -- that's how the district attorney describes drug abuse in Schuylkill County.
But one group is trying to change that. "The Skook Recovers" celebrated its one year anniversary last week, and its members are making a difference.
Jessica Tyler and Travis Snyder are recovering drug addicts. After serving time in prison, Travis created an outlet for other people in Schuylkill County to share their own stories.
District Attorney Christine Holman told Eyewitness News the group is a "blessing", especially since drug-related crimes are on the rise in Schuylkill County.
She said in 2015, about 37% of all the criminal complaints filed in the county had something to do with drugs. Heroin was at the top of the list, followed by meth and marijuana.
The district attorney said Schuylkill County applied for a federal grant to start a drug court, which would help non-violent offenders come clean, and a long-term treatment center could be coming in the future.
