Howdy!
I hate these 'About Me' things. I'm a freelance editor and copywriter who also aspires to be a published author. Although I edit novels mostly, I'm still trying to figure out how best to deliver my own stories. I'm not convinced I'm a novelist. My first and forever love is the short story, with film running a close second.
My stories are about real people with real issues who manage to find their versions of happy despite the many, many challenges thrown at them. The time in history and locations and major players may vary from the 1800s Chicago lawyer to present-day Greeley fracker, but the central theme remains the same: redemption.
I love to read a well-crafted tale, who doesn't, but because I'm an editor, it's difficult to turn that part of my brain off when I read and write, which also makes drafting my stories painful and slow.
Gratuitous anything is a turn-off, so I steer clear of most erotica and horror unless I can see a clear plot and character development (not to mention, interesting writing voice) right away. Please don't tell me "it gets good after chapter five." You've got like three pages to hook me.
It's not that I want a whiz-bang read, I just want a story that keeps me asking, "What happens next?". Make me care deeply for the person I'm reading about, and you'll have a fan for life!
