Dark Fantasy is a subgenre of Fantasy which blends dark, monstrous, or supernatural elements--borrowed from Horror--with the magic, whimsy, or otherworldliness of Fantasy to create stories in which protagonists are as likely monsters as maidens, magic has a price, and mythological beings are more malevolent than they appear. Dark Fantasy stories can be gloomy, gritty, grim, or gory in their atmosphere, and set in one dark fantastical world or between multiple worlds, or layers within our world.
