Hey lovelies, hope you're all keeping well! There's something I'd like to address. Vampire Academy has always been my safe space when feeling down, and a series I'll always return to. Only, lately, instead of rereading the books, which I have probably done a hundred times, I've been returning to the series, especially as my eyes are just too fatigued for reading after a full day of work.
So, with every rewatch, I find myself growing more attached to this show and its characters. I'm just obsessed with Rose and Dimitri's scenes together. Their chemistry, their action, their fights, their drama. Admittedly, I skim through most other stuff, such as the political scenes with Victor, because to be fair, they went a little too heavy on that, in my opinion.
Either way, I find myself finishing the show with a feeling of complete heartache and disappointment. This show really was an amazing adaptation, regardless of the changes they made. Some made more sense than others, but in the end I think they really took seriously the themes that were being explored in VA, and leaned into them even more, which I found equal parts admirable and brave. The unfair treatment of the dhampirs, the slavish devotion to old ways and customs, the problematisation of Victor's struggles and how he sort of spirals into the dark side in his desperation to change things, even to the point of abusing Lissa. Everything just feels so raw and fresh and serious, and I love it. It's what I really loved about the book series. Yes, the first book was more about friendship and teenage drama, hinting more at the bigger issues that loom on the horizon, but the show just dives into them straight away.
