Addor stood at the window. Her nimble hands professionally traced the muscles beneath the fur. By now, the dog knew of her tendencies. He knew she was tracing his veins, bones, tendons and muscles in her mind as her hands roamed. Despite this, the pleasurable pettings were just as satisfying if she weren't thinking so. Rather because of her insights, her hands were well adapted to giving the best effect.
He loved being in her arms. Lingering at the edge of death, as all living being do at her side, had become as natural as breathing. He knew just how to move and when to hold still to suit her mood. He only had to hold the thought of 'If I die, I die.' Otherwise the stress would have eaten him up long ago.
There was only one living creature in her life that did not have to worry about such things. It didn't matter how large or powerful you were, Addor had a knack for finding weaknesses. The only one who didn't need to worry about being killed by her was...
In the room lit by the light of a fire sat a girl sitting next to an open window. The heat of the fire didn't reach her, but the cold from the dark night most certainly numbed her. If not for her wandering hands one would think her a doll. Or maybe a corpse. Her eyes were just that dead.
The door creaked open.
The girl jumped out of her chair, the god on her lap ignored and forgotten in the process. It landed nimbly on its feet as of expecting such treatment, and walked over to warm itself by the fireplace. The dog didn't even have to look to know that the girls' eyes were now filled with life and vigor. Of course, it wasn't due to the wind blowing, a ghost or haunting, not even the delivery of food. It was due to the arrival of the only living creature she could never bring herself to kill. The only man she ever loved.
