Heart break isn’t a sudden shattering of the heart, like described in fanfics. It’s more of a slow sinking feeling, which may not hit immediately as a result of shock or even if you’re just so in love you’re practically blind to what’s in front of you.
Heart break hits a little later than expected, sometimes when you least expect it. When you think you’re over it but really, you’re not. When even a year later you can see that person and feel melancholy, feel that twang when you realise how different things were between you and them once upon a time.
Heart break isn’t always so much of an earth quake as it is a tsunami, slow to build but completely overpowering, coming in waves. Waves of confusion and denial and despair.
The one thing fanfics get right? The pain. Heart break is a mf and trust me, it makes itself known. Maybe not immediately but when it hits, it HURTS. It’s feels like drowning at times, sometimes in the self doubt but other times just in tears alone. Drowning in the form of “How could they do this to me?”, “What could I have done differently?” and “This isn’t the person I built a relationship with”.
But when everything is said and done, heart break is just another hurdle in life. Another wound that time can heal. Although it feels like you’re dipping below the surface, you’ll always come right back up. Because we all deserve to be happy and we ourselves recognise that one failed relationship isn’t the end of the line. Stay strong people, and always remember that my doors are always open if someone needs a buddy :)
