Writer's comment on continuity.
Part of Riri Williams history early on was "Her biological father was gunned down before she was born, a victim of a robbery. Her childhood best friend and her loving, devoted step dad were both killed as part of a drive by shooting in a public park."
That kind of back story shapes a character, the same as it would shape a human being. Their whole personality is impacted. It's the lens that character forever sees the world through, for good or for bad. It's not as trivial as "does this character like ham and pineapple pizza?"
One of the writers who took over the character had the idea "Hey, what if her biological father actually faked his death so he could go join a conspiracy to take over the world? Guy works at a gas station, so conspiring to take over the world makes TOTAL SENSE right?"
Um... yeah. Thomas and Martha Wayne weren't really murdered in front of ten year old Bruce Wayne. They just REALLY wanted to go to Europe without the kid for 20 years on vacation, so they faked their death.
Uncle Ben wasn't REALLY killed by a burglar that Peter had earlier not helped capture. It was all a life insurance scam that Uncle Ben and Aunt May cooked up.
See how stupid that sounds? See how it undermines the whole backstory, the whole lens the character sees the world through?
So yeah. I'm throwing out the "Her biological father faked his death to help try and conquer the world" thing. It was a breathtakingly stupid editorial decision to allow it, about as bad as if someone declared "OK, new canon, Krypton never blew up. Superman's parents just didn't like babies."
Nuff said.
