I think the best type of books are books that people either passionately love or passionately hate (maybe even both) because then you can see more clearly who you are as a person and what your dislikes and likes are. They spike controversies and big discussions. I think that's the reason why books should never be banned, especially in a learning institution. Even if you don't have the same viewpoint as the book does or is terribly outdated, you learn something.
The best books out there aren't my favorite books though. Most of the time I read to have a good time. My favorite books are with characters that feel so real that they're so easy to picture in my head. I also like plot twists that aren't easy to catch but there are still clues so when I reread I would wonder how I missed that. I would say that I'm a picky reader but at the same time I read across many genres.
