          	“I can’t believe you, Dames,” August says as he fusses over my long wet hair, freshly showered, combing out the knots and twisting it into braids with his delicate fingers. “You went swimming without me? You know water’s short. We can’t afford to have many showers, now can we?”
               I open my mouth to protest, furious, but turn around to see that he’s joking. I sigh and turn around, running my fingers through Wesley’s fur. He gives a weak “mrrp” before resting his head into his paws.
               “I only did it because your stupid cat fell into the canal,” I huff. “No other reason.”
               He grins good-naturedly and says airily, “Of course.”
               There is a long, peaceful silence. 
               August stands up suddenly, startling Wesley. 
               “Sorry,” August murmurs, scratching the cat behind the ears and then helping me to my feet.
               “Where are you going?” I ask. 
               “Bed.” The corner of his mouth quirks up into a half-smile, and he presses a firm kiss against my lips. “Good night, Damien.”
          	As he’s heading out of the room, I pipe up. 
          	“I saw something… at the bottom of the canal.”
          	August turns to face me. “And…?”
          	I look down and shuffle my feet, if only to have something to do. “Well… I know it’s against code, but I’d like to go back there. Go back into the water.”
