So like, i got a lord of the rings book yesterday and in the 4th chapter of it, Sam said smth about rhe elves they met. "...  and so gay and sad..." 
          I bought it in english, although im no native speaker. Can someone explain like, do they mean gay as in liking men or gay in another direction?
