This morning, my sixth grade choir director died of a seizure. She was the first person ever to take me seriously as a musician and to see my potential. I would probably not be pursuing musical theatre for a career if not for her. Just a few minutes ago I found out that Phantom of the Opera, the musical that made me fall in love with theatre, is closing on Broadway after 35 years. Ms Martin introduced me to this show in our music class. Christine was my first dream role, and I still know every song like the back of my head and tear up at the ending. I never imagined that a day would come, at least in my lifetime, when people would stop wanting to see this life-changing musical, especially on the same day that the most life-changing (non-family) person in my life breathed her last breath. Goodbye, Ms. Martin. Goodbye, Phantom.
You alone could make my song take flight… it’s over now, the music of the night.
