“Your little disaster team,” he muttered.
          
          “They’re not a team yet,” Analexa said. “But they will be.”
          
          “And why do I matter?”
          
          Analexa met his eyes—really met them—in a way that made Dash’s stomach tighten.
          
          “Because the Omega-class mecha requires five pilots,” she said.
          
          “So find five cadets.”
          
          “I don’t need cadets.” Her voice lowered. “I need the five who were chosen.”

"So...you came then?"

Starlight stepped forward, reaching for the glinting golden ring and sliding the hissing band back onto her wrist. "I told you, didn't I? That this would end in fire and frost." She crouched beside him, her breath curling in the frigid air between them. "You were never meant to carry that kind of power. Even pixies burn out when they try to shine too bright."

"You have two options in this world," Analexa said, folding her arms and staring him down. "You either learn to fight or you learn to run. Which are you going to do, Doctor?"

          *two eyes peer hopefully around around the bend*

"I was scared," he admitted. His voice broke on the word, and he looked down again, ashamed. "Scared that if I told anyone, they'd hate me. That I'd be cast out, like one of the old stories—like Shade. What I can do... it isn't natural."
          
          "No one's throwin' you out of anywhere," Rosetta said softly.
          
          "Speak for yourself," Vidia muttered under her breath. But she didn't mean it.

"Here." Lunk pointed to strange letterings that Blip didn't understand. Wavy lines, all drawing away from a central mass, each diverting to a separate portion of the mecha's infrastructure. "See that? There are five interface ports. This thing's meant for a team."
          
          Blip's brow furrowed. He didn't understand the language, but he understood enough of what he was hearing. "Five?"
          
          "Five minds. Five energy patterns. Maybe five separate control nodes. I don't know. Siara knows more about this sort of thing than I do—she loves space—but this isn't a solo machine, surely. And if someone left this for us on purpose—"
          
          "Then they already picked their pilots," Blip finished quietly.
          
          "And we are definitely not here by accident."
