Hello to my sisters and starlings!!

Ever feel overwhelmed and unsure about where to go or who to turn to for help? Do you sometimes keep things in because you’re scared you’ll be judged or criticized? Asking for help is daunting, especially when you’re a teen. I know I absolutely suffered with the anxiety of being an emotional burden on those I love, which often led to me trying to work through my problems and fears alone – believing that I didn’t deserve to take up space.

But I’ve learned the importance of reaching out and as a result, I am so proud to be partnered with Kids Help Phone as they prepare to launch an incredible program: RISE UP. A service for Black youth across Canada, providing them with wellness support and mental health resources.
RiseUp is a national, 24/7, bilingual e-mental health support service for Black youth. The service is free and available from coast to coast to coast. It’s a program built in collaboration with Black community partners, Kids Help Phone’s Black Advisory Council, BlackNorth Initiative and people from across the Afro-diaspora of many different ages, genders and backgrounds, and will be set to launch during World Mental Health Day.
In collaboration with this incredible initiative, I’ve been commissioned to write a one-short short story: THE WEIGHT OF A HEARTBEAT: https://www.wattpad.com/1482365260-the-weight-of-a-heartbeat-riseup-collaboration

For anyone struggling with mental health or, like Allix, feeling utterly overwhelmed with life and responsibilities—please know that you are safe and worthy and I hope you also reach out to these incredible resources and get the help you need. Thank you all for being part of my journey here on this platform and I can't wait to hear what you think of Allix!

The ride home was as lively as our town's graveyard. I was glued to the door the entire time, ready to jump out the minute we got to my house or just in case he decided to bring up what Dream Hero had had no problem discussing. I clutched the door handle like it was a lifeline and prayed it wouldn't result in me jumping out of a moving car.

          Hero didn't seem to notice.

It was clear that his mind was somewhere else. He didn't try to talk to me like he had done back in class which was good because all that I could think about was the fact that he had friendzoned me and that he had gotten Melissa's name wrong.

I wanted to correct him so bad that I just—

"It's Melissa." I blurted out the minute I got out of the car. "The girl Donovan's with, her name is Melissa. Not Melinda."

"Okay? Potato Tomato." was his response. He looked at my hand that was still clutching the car door before looking back at me. "Can I go now?"

"It's actually," I chuckled nervously, letting go of the door. "It's, um, tomato—Potato Potato and Tomato Tomato but I get your confusion—"

          "Harley."

          "Hm?"

"Close the door." He muttered and I scrambled to do just that before rushing to get inside so that I could scream into my pillow at how ridiculous I had just been."Harley." He called out once more and I screeched to a halt like an unoiled robot, waiting for him to speak.

"Check your messages once in a while." He mumbled. "Otherwise exchanging numbers would be pointless, wouldn't it?"

Hello to all my Sisters and Starlings!!

I know it has been ages, but I am thrilled to be back with a brand story that is going to hit you in the feels. In collaboration with KIDS HELP PHONE, to raise awareness for their Rise Up program, I’ve written a short story about Allix Nelson, a young Black girl overcoming the stress of life, expectations and—something many of us all know too well—heartbreak.

In collaboration with this incredible initiative, I’ve been commissioned to write a one-short short story: THE WEIGHT OF A HEARTBEAT: 18-year-old Allix Nelson—eldest of four siblings and proverbial golden child—has finally hit rock bottom. After finding out her boyfriend cheated on her, she is utterly heartbroken, but with a full ride scholarship on the line Allix can’t afford to blow this final exam. Heart heavy with grief, and the overwhelming burden of so much riding on her shoulders, she’s overworked and overwhelmed with no one she feels she can safely open up to. That is until she hears about Kids Help Phone’s RISE UP campaign, compelling her to do the unthinkable: reach out to a stranger for help.
