Two big things are quickly creeping up on us: 1, my 18th birthday (it's tomorrow, Guy Fawkes' Day!), and 2, SoI: Night's tenth chapter; and if you know me and how I write stories, you'd know that a tenth chapter is the finale to the current arc - it means crazy stuff's gonna go down... and that it's gonna be named after a song.
As for the current chapter, chapter 8, it's shaping up to be a more personal, vulnerable plot focusing on a rather unfortunate development in Sun's life, but it doesn't stay dreary for long. Because things go right... and then wrong. Very wrong. Maple was more important than you'd think... Not to spoil it too much, but... I had this idea I wanted to do for a scene in this chapter, where Sun is looking in the mirror, and then she sees herself - her shadow of sorts - walk into the room. Imagine you seeing another you walk into a room.
Also, just clearing up some stuff... I've written Maple's nature as an unraveling mystery which some characters know more about than we the readers do, but I'm going to just go ahead and state the facts about her, as to avoid confusion. Maple is an Antumbra, a magical creature from the "other world" (Equestria) which latches onto ideas - what-ifs - in people's mind, and embodies them. Their true forms are shadowy and macropodine (meaning, looking vaguely like a kangaroo), but they can take on whatever form suits the idea they're taking from. Maple has taken from Sun's idea of that girl named Maple she once met who may not truly exist. A bit of extra info for those familiar with MLP's lore: Antumbra are a "sister race" of Umbrum like King Sombra (and, if you've read SoI1&2, Avalonia and Nero), being posssibly created from the darkness Despoena. There's also another kind. a "brother race"... but that lends itself to spoilers for SoI: Night, so... just wait, you'll see. For now, though, just know that they function in a similar way to Antumbra, but more... nightmarish. Not fun.
Thanks for reading so far!
