@FlawsomeFabulist If you have a good idea in your mind of exactly how you want your characters to look, you could try making Sims of their appearance, screenshot them and upload them as pictures into the book. That way you can have complete creative freedom over how they look and they can turn out exactly how you want them to. If you have no clue how you want them to look, you can just randomly generate a Sim and do that instead. If you don't like my idea, you don't have to do it, but I figured I'd offer it. As for the price, if you don't have the game and don't want to buy it (which is understandable), what I did is found a version where for 48 hours you can create Sims on it. You can't really do anything else, but you shouldn't need to. It's 48 hours total, not 48 consecutive hours, so if you use it for an hour, then abandon it for a week, when you come back, you should have 47 hours left. That's how it was for me anyway. I don't know if they are still doing it or if it has changed since I did it a couple months ago, but you can look into it if you want to. If you don't like my idea, just completely ignore that I said anything. I also haven't seen a lot of people use that idea before. Anyway, sorry for ranting so long. Have a great day/night!
