*one fist clenched tight at her side, she stepped in behind him, drawing near enough to feel the heat of his body at her back as she flung the burning firebrand toward the oncoming beasts. the flame split the dark in a wild arc, sparks scattering as it struck before them. they did not retreat. the creatures surged forward, low and snarling, their teeth catching the light in jagged flashes, too many, too sharp, like something dragged up from the deep. the sound of them set her teeth on edge. alara snatched up the firebrand again, lifting it with a shaking hand, breath caught sharp in her throat as the scent of smoke and damp earth filled her lungs.*      where the hell did they come from?     *her voice broke rough, jaw tightening as she glanced past him, panic rising despite herself.*     they will tear through my flocks—every last one of them.    
          
          *sweat slipped along her temple as she staggered back, her shoulder striking against him, grounding her for the briefest moment. her footing faltered, heel catching against a loose stone, and the firebrand slipped from her grasp, striking the ground with a dull scatter of embers. in that same breath the creatures lunged, closing the distance in a rush of claws and breath and sound. fear seized her whole, and she cried out, scrambling backward with both hands raised as if to ward them off. *    klaus!

            ⠀⠀ (  .. )⠀  ❛   აune’s scent alone was the source of his recognition. there was a time he recalled being able to see her face as clear as day, though it was no longer a sight to behold. his mind, however, still clung to the remnants of a lost past shared in forbidden secrecy. stiffened shoulders held their tension, turning lax only when he forced a slower breath through his lungs. his head tilted, honing in on the mouse-like silence of her steps across the room. even that had remained the same—he cut his thoughts short.
            
            ⠀⠀    ⠀⠀ the study stood in quiet wealth around him. tall shelves lined the walls from floor to ceiling, burdened with aged books and parchment. the faint scent of leather bindings and old paper settled into the air, warmed by the low crackle of a nearby hearth. somewhere, the soft tick of a clock measured time with quiet precision. klaus reached toward the edge of the desk, fingers brushing along the polished wood until they found what he sought. a letter had been prepared for her. alas, he took hold of it, and with a controlled sweep of his arm, klaus held it out in vast silence. ⋆
