So I just rewatched Encanto. And ALL of their gifts are coping mechanisms. Luisa feels weak, so her thing makes her stronger. Isabella copes by trying to be perfect, so the flowers help with that. Delores feels like she need to be aware of everything, so she is. With Antonio people who gravitate more towards animals then people do so because animals have a specific predictable reaction to things. Camilo's coping mechanism is becoming what people want him to be. Which is very common. Pepa's gift helps other people to see what she's feeling. Julieta's coping mechanism is healing others, so her gift made her able to do that. Bruno's has to do with being the scapegoat. And trying to tell what will happen is a common coping mechanism for a traumatic family. And did you notice that casita does what Abuela AND Mirabel tell it to. No one else. Abuela's gift was the house. And Mirabel did get a gift, her lack of one made her able to see what was happening to casita, the houses structure is stronger the stronger the family bond is. She was able to see what was happening to the family when no one else could. And casita needed to fall apart for Abuela to realize what she was doing to the family. She was protecting the miracle instead of celebrating it.
