I wish you’d grasp the depth of your impact as a writer.
From the Ramona Parks series to Requiem, passing by FIGHT, you’ve always known how to reach your readers and adapt your writing to the right time and season. Your work is ethereal.
You speak truth through your books.
I will always identify myself with Magenta Thomas. She is the realest character I’ve ever read about, whether in nonfiction or fiction. You crafted her, mastered her; you placed in her a piece of the little Black girl we all had to kill within us. Through her life, we are given hope, vision, lessons, and the determination to want better, do better, and be better.
Fun fact: after reading the book, I went by Magenta Thomas on all social media platforms, and my entourage began calling me Gen without even knowing the backstory.
I chose that name as a reminder that I am not the product of my environment, but of the choices and decisions I make for myself.
You’re a good writer, Gen, so don’t give up on your work or this platform. We may not be millions of readers, but the handful of people hanging onto every single word you choose to share are grateful that you think of us.
Your work guides.
We will wait for your next book and learn from it. Enjoy it, and share it with the same hope you’ve always given us.
P.S.: Please don’t delete Requiem. I want to see who Nati becomes, how she and Voni will hopefully do better than Gen and Gee did at their debut.
It matters to me, to us… please x
