¡Oye!

Basmithas reached out a hand, and I fell to my knees, vomiting blood. Pain tore through me, sharper than anything I had ever known. For a moment, Basmithas held my hand, and then let go. Instantly, the vomiting stopped. I looked up at Basmithas, realizing that what I had just experienced was only a glimpse of the suffering they carried.

“Is there… anything I can do to help?” I whispered, my voice trembling.

Basmithas extended their hand once more. I hesitated, fear clawing at me, but then I took it again. And in that moment, I saw everything, the past, the present, and the future. I saw the world, its beauty and its horrors. I saw what would become of all of you. And then…

           I saw my own death.

A moment I could not escape, a fate I could not change. Tears streamed down my face as the weight of it crushed me.

“How… how can you endure that?” I asked, my voice breaking.

Basmithas did not answer. Instead, they stepped closer and touched my forehead. The visions, the pain, the knowledge they all vanished. My mind cleared.

My body gave way, and I collapsed into Basmithas’ lap. I did not understand what had just happened but Basmithas did. They had been created to endure this, to see everything and survive it. I could not. And so, Basmithas spared me from what I was never meant to carry. They erased the memory.

That was the first and the last time Basmithas tested the limits of a human mind.

“My greatest sin was that I couldn’t love you the way you loved me.”

He gently touched her cheek and replied, “My love was never supposed to be a burden to you.’”

He leaned in and kissed her on the lips, lingering for a moment as if trying to memorize her. Then he slowly pulled back.

“Don’t walk out those doors,” she whispered, her voice trembling.

He looked at her, pain and acceptance in his eyes, a faint, sad smile on his lips.
“Even before the stars appeared in the sky,” he told her softly, “our fates were already decided.”

He took a step toward the door, pausing just long enough to glance back once more, then turned and walked away, leaving her in silence.

If she could still feel human emotions, she would have fallen apart in pieces, for she knew that once he exited the doors he would never return, death waited for him outside. She watched, emotionless, as he walked away.

And if those emotions were still hers to bear, surely death would have followed her too, for she could not have survived such heartbreak.
