It is meant to be implied at the end of Anna's Book that she did not survive the night. Kern says " I need you to do one more thing for me and then i promise you can be with your grandmother for all ETERNITY." Since we know grandmother is dead ( we hear the gunshot), the implication is meant to be that he was going to kill her when he was through abusing her:-/ Brent's chapter after confirms that she died ( his friend says thats prob what happened since the king's reserve kills those they find practicing forbidden magik/with The Book).
The final confirmation ( since i know you have read this far) comes in chapter 8 of A Dangerous Destiny. Manna tells Fiona that she received news that an old friend/initiate member Mariana Cassis and her granddaughter were killed by the night guard.
Its subtle, but the answers are there This is actually part of why i separated the prologue from the main book. Some people understood that Anna was dead, but others got confused. In the end i decided that since both MCs die in the prologue ( anna and grandmother) its best to keep it as a separate standalone story.
