You’re right, the changes you made or spacing does not affect people’s understanding of the story. But you want to do everything you can to make sure they get pulled into it and stay there. People are busy. If there’s anything that is confusing, or hard to understand they leave and move on to another story. You are competing with hundreds of other books. You want to make sure you have a great description to pull them to your book. It does not have to give them the entire plot but to get them interested in your specific story and how it can make them escape from their busy and boring life, and also how is your different from all the other ones on the same topic.
I’m no expert in writing, but I read a minimum of 1 book a day. I have also read tons of books on how to write a story. As soon as finish school (in December) I hope to start writing my own. I know it’s much harder than I originally though but I will give it a go. If a story has an interesting description, I’ll try to tough it out and continue reading a little more even if there’s something lacking. There were several books, I have skipped pages, just hoping that the story would pick up and have better descriptions, or conversation or even some action. After several tries, I just gave up and moved on.
