Don't bring up Trump when Maddie is around.
I like bringing up Trump when my grandparents are around.
I like bringing up homosexuality when my grandparents are around.
I like bringing up Black Lives Matter when my grandparents are around.
I like riling them up.
I like the fight.
I like letting them know how much I disagree.
I like letting them down.
I like being the granddaughter they never wanted, because I'm the grandson they never wanted.
I like they way they don't glare at me, and instead glare at my mom, like it's all her fault.
I don't like bringing up Trump when Maddie is around.
I don't like bringing up Trump, or homosexuality, or Black Lives Matter.
I don't like to argue with Maddie.
Because she's still the best friend I've ever had.
And people get mad about that, yet they aren't offering to be my friend.
I can sense when it's about to go wrong, because we go silent and make direct eye contact.
I quickly change the topic, or sometimes I let Maddie be ignorant and just politely disagree.
Sometimes I get mad at her because when I disagree, she tells me "it's okay."
I get mad because she doesn't know how unapologetic I normally am.
But she doesn't know how lonely I am.
So despite our differences.
Despite her opinion.
Her awful, horrible, crude-
Anyway.
I am liberal.
She is conservative.
But we are people.
We want love.
We want happiness.
We want lives.
So don't bring up Trump when Maddie is around.
Please, it hurts us all.
