Crippling debt isn't optional in American universities like you made it sound like it is in Britain. In state tuition in America starts around $23,000 for a cheap university and doubles when you go out of state. Even worse is that nobody understands that it's the Federal Reserve's fault and the president can't fix it, so now we have a load of people getting liberal arts degrees to learn how to protest the high cost of college all the while digging themselves into debt.
