For me, I try not to think about mystery as something I have to constantly hide from the reader. I focus more on the characters first. I let them live their lives, build relationships, make mistakes, and react to situations naturally. The mystery is there, but it stays in the background until the story reaches a point where revealing it feels earned. Yeah that’s the term, earned and not spoon fed.
When I'm writing romantic suspense, I usually reveal enough to create questions, but not enough to answer them. I want readers to feel that something is off or unresolved without immediately knowing what it is.
From what you shared about Sophie and Marco, from a reader’s POV, I'd enjoy seeing their connection develop naturally while letting the bigger questions linger in the background for a while.
