Usually, I don’t really try and say stuff like this but I’m confused lately. Recently, on a YouTube Short, a black female creator was accused of “BLACK WASHING” Izuku Midoriya from BNHA.

This concept of “black washing” was created during a revolution of white creators going under fire for making poc characters fully white. The comments were basically comparing “black washing” to modern day white washing. White washing has happened many times throughout history so “black washing” was said to be its counterpart to try and fight of racism claims that white washing literally is.

I think it’s completely wrong to change a character’s ENTIRE ethnicity. But brown skinned/black people rarely have representation in the anime community. Even cosplaying an anime character gets us a, “_____ isn’t black.” If you decide to make a character half black, it doesn’t take away from the fact that they are still Japanese.

A person mentioned that even making an anime character half Black/Latinx/Indigenous etc., is racist. They are saying that black washing is the same thing as white washing and that shit don’t sit right with me.

Please let me know your opinions on the matter: I personally believe as long as you don’t completely change the character to where you cannot recognize them, it’s okay as you take in their original race and value. I’m also letting you know that wanting some representation for your RACE isn’t wrong. It’s just drawing attention to the fact that there is barely or none in the first place. Don’t be ashamed for wanting representation that you don’t have.

Also, I also believe that Horikoshi doesn’t really care if you make his characters half black or not considering him giving us amazing canonically black characters like Rock Lock, Mina Ashido, and Miruko.

Please let me know how this makes you feel! (Especially my fellow black people.)
