            “ i’m super careful — like all the time — “ he flitted around absentmindedly , settling with resting his chin on soap’s shoulder with an amused smirk .
            “ you’d have to talk to cecil about being careful , he had me try to hold my breath in magma yesterday ( my record is seven minutes by the way ) . i don’t mind a few bruises , and it’s kinda fun . . . getting to try out all that stuff , “ the incident itself was awkward though , a lot of his suit got burnt through . . at least he’d ordered more replacements .
            “ yeah sure , why don’t i just have you all shipped off on a forty year cruise ? “ mark teased , kissing john’s cheek affectionately .

            “ doesn’t matter tae me if you need tae get stronger or not..  i just want you tae keep bein’ careful is all .  ” he frowned some , always hated seeing mark get hurt whenever the other joined on missions or surprisingly showed up due to soap being in danger .  yes , he did appreciate being cared for but not at the expense of someone he loved getting hurt , if not worse injuries .  “ same should apply tae him then .  cannae remember the last time the old geezer ever took a break..  maybe we could drag simon into this .  poor bastard needs a LOOOOONG break or retirement if anythin’ .  ” he lightly shrugged , unable to hold back a small laugh from himself .

            “ i can try , i’m just on a new training regimen so . . . y’know — i can get stronger . it’s fine , “ he reassured gently , even though it wasn’t an intense glare mark did feel bad for making john worry over him . well . . . he had been getting more worn out recently , he wouldn’t be much good if he was always tired . this wasn’t even counting how much his arms hurt from always weight lifting .
            “ with how many times you’ve almost gotten killed i’m surprised he hasn’t just let you retire already , “ he shook his head with a quiet laugh , but it would be nice if john got some time off , if they were lucky maybe they could even have a date night .

            it was still an odd feeling , receiving  affection .  especially considering how their relationship started in the first place— if you could even call it that in the beginning .  “ i don’t got a choice in the matter .  you cling to me like some sloth the minute we’re in bed together .  ” not that graves was complaining , if anything he secretly welcomed the comfort .

            mark merely smiled , running his thumb across graves’s cheekbone , “ you should get used to expecting it then , besides we cuddle like every night . “
            it was nice just having a moment to themselves like this , especially with how busy they usually were .

            graves let a small hum out at that , finding himself already leaning against the other’s palm .  it was odd , feeling gentler hands against his skin— against the small scar placed on the side of his left cheek .  “ never said that  ,  did i ?  just wasn’t expecting it was all .  ”

            he chuckled quietly at that , cupping john’s face in his hands and pressing a few more kisses against his lips , “ so you / are / shy . that’s adorable , i need to take my shirt off more often . “ 
            he didn’t mind showing off his body every now and then , only for john of course . even though he had his fair share of insecurities it was nice knowing john appreciated him regardless .

            john let out a light scoff in protest , he wasn’t shy .  hardly the fact— he just didn’t want the other to see just how red his face can actually get .  “ yer bum's oot the windae  ,  i am NOT shy .  ” he grumbled out loud , his pout didn’t last long as mark then kissed the corner of his lips .  “ you’re just so bonnie that it’s hard for me tae look at you fully without lookin’ like a walkin’ tomato .  ”

            mark rolled his eyes and crossed his arms , “ nothing new but you can’t even look at my chest properly . sounds like someone’s a bit shy . “
            it was endearing in a way , mark liked seeing john get flustered . he stepped forward , draping his arms over john’s shoulders for a moment as he kissed the corner of his lips .

            “ hm . . . “ there was a pause as mark gave philip’s hand a gentle squeeze , his head nuzzling against his side tiredly . 
            “ you did what you could with what you had . . . but i — i get it , feeling responsible for people’s lives . . i feel that way about chicago , “ he confessed quietly . in all honesty mark was at a loss for what to say when it came to this sort of thing , mainly because he was working through his own situation that felt eerily similar .
            “ i know they’d be happy though just knowing you think about them and care for them , it makes you a good leader . “

            wasn’t long before a sigh left him , aside from shepard and him no one else really knew how those missiles really gotten into hassan’s hands .  sure , 141 knew NOW but that didn’t made things any better .  as a man and has a commander , he just couldn’t handle anyone finding out .  “ on a mission awhile back i lost some good men .  it was supposed to be an easy one  ,  bring the supplies and head home .  but i might’ve gotten some information wrong which costed those boys lives .  they were supposed to make it back  ,  it was MY fault it happened .  i couldn’t do shit about it either..  shepard said it was too risky which i still think is bullshit .  ” he took in another deep breath , brows furrowing some .  “ ever shadow i’ve lost..  ever shadow that’s went missing .  i remember them all .  each and every one of them .  i remember .  ”

            “ . . . “ mark wasn’t going to push for answers , there were things he never really talked about too . the least he could do was offer some comfort , even as he laid back down he kept his hand on philip’s and pressed his body closer . 
            “ even if it’s nothing new , it’s bothering you , “ mark’s voice was soft as he looked for the proper words to say , the last thing he wanted was to make philip feel pressured to tell him .

"are we going to fight, or what?" alex asked, cutting to the chase. he wasn't really in the mood to engage in combat but he would do so if needed. besides, he was used to heroes and soldiers being hostile as soon as they realized it was him.

            “ quite a bit a judgement directed towards the guy you just met , must mean you’re insecure , “ of course mark was aware of how his suit looked , but the thing was he / knew / he looked cool and he pulled off the design well so he wasn’t very bothered by the comments thrown his way .

mark's words caused the walking, talking, virus to pause momentarily.
            "it's better than whatever you have got goin' on." alex waved his hand to vaguely to the hero's attire again.

with a final puff of air , the soldier heaved himself up onto the building , and planted himself in the middle , arms tucked beneath its head as he laid beside the other . 
            if only it hadn't smoked the last of its cigarettes beforehand , it mused , because their surprise meeting seemed the perfect time . 
            
            he gazed up at the hero , brown eyes almost black , pupils blown wide from the rush of adrenaline . they crinkled with his grin , hidden beneath the scrim net . 
            
            ' not a good one , nein ( no ) , that's too easy . much harder to scare soldiers . now greenies might think i'm approachable , that won't do . '

            this won a snort of amusement out of mark who flew after the man with relative ease . for the sake of krueger’s reputation he did move quickly and even when he was on the roof he didn’t sit on the edge . he knew that his suit was easily recognizable , it was designed that way so that he could be noticed or even signaled down if people found it necessary . mark would admit , it probably wasn’t the best for having private conversations with or stealth for that matter , “ must not be a good reputation in the first place if you’re worried about talking to one of earth’s greatest heroes . “

it considered the hero for a moment , more than pleased with the admission . never had he been a fan of goody two-shoes types . 
            mind made up , krueger opted to be generous for a change — the soldier pushed off the wall , no doubt mark would follow along , and with a well-practiced ease , scaled the small building — so that they could talk , tucked away on the roof , with a smaller chance of being caught . invincible was an eyesore after all . 
            
            ' lucky me , ' he huffed as he pulled himself toward the rooftop , ' you are damaging my hard-earned reputation . they'll start to think i'm a good person if heroes seek me out . '

            huffing in reply , john granted one in return— a far more gentler one than he’d usually give someone .  he knew the other could handle it due to their alien genetics but that didn’t mean he wanted to test it regardless .  “ here’s hopin’ we ever get the chance .  i couldn’t stand leavin’ ‘em behind though..  especially with all my military work .  maybe i’ll get lucky enough and be able tae retire .  ” he snickered softly , as if he’d ever get so lucky but it wouldn’t hurt to at least be so hopefully .

            mark promptly elbowed john's side the moment the comment left his lips , scoffing and rolling his eyes , but it was obvious he found it funny . he became more pensive as he thought more about it , having a kid was a lot of responsibility , but he understood what it was like taking care of a baby even if it was only for a few months , " i wouldn't be offering if i wasn't . no pressure , i don't expect it to happen right away or anything . "
            if anything the nine months of growing the baby was his biggest concern , he wouldn't be able to drop everything and save the world like he'd done in the past , let alone protect himself .
