New year, new outlook. Bring it.

Dear 2020 November me, it's nearly been two years. I've celebrated a lot of landmarks in those two years. I graduated college (a year early,) ended and started a new relationship, lost and gained new friends, traveled to new places and conquered some fears. The current fear is the ever-present "what am I going to do next?" but we've been feeling that since we were kids, right? So this is nothing new, just a new situation. I'm also committing to a new set of beliefs, which feels so strange to think about in terms of my upbringing. Job offers come and go but nothing truly sticks, but I know something will be sticking in the future. This life is important and it's also important to enjoy yourself, never forget that.
I have no idea how often I'll be writing these entries to myself, but it's nice to see where I once started. To future me: I love you and I believe in you. You are capable.

Dear Last September me, I am amazed that I haven't written you in nearly a full year (it'll be a year four days from now). It's certainly been a trip, this year especially. You've been in college for a full year and a quarter now, and you've been making stellar grades and some new connections. College is online because of Covid, but you're making the best of it. You've made a schedule and you're doing your best to stick to it, which I'm incredibly proud of. You're not sure when the light will come out again, but until then you're making your own light. There are bad days and there are good days. You are doing your best. I am sitting here in an oversized hoodie looking at Christmas lights, and I cannot say I've ever been prouder for what we've been able to accomplish. Your mental health is still intact, as are your grades and your relationships. I'd say that's really all that matters at the end of the day. Last September you wrote "we can do this" and that turned out to be true. Evolving and surviving is what we do best. To the future me, I do not know what the future holds, but I hope you keep your head above the water, whether it be high or low. Cheers to us.

Dear September me, college is fantastic. You have so many more friends and you are really becoming YOU. You understand yourself way better than ever before. Sometimes a project seems tough, but you have pushed through. You have such untapped passion for what you love, it's astonishing to watch. You have also greatly improved with being able to understand and work with your anxiety, to the point that you gave what I would call the best presentation you have given so far in your life. It took 10 minutes for your Foundations of Story class, and it went wonderfully. The class got to learn about you and understand you, and it was a very cathartic experience. I think in your heart you've always just wanted to be understood and recognized. That day you really were. You were so angry to have not gotten into the college of your choice, but this was even better. Sometimes getting into the last college on your list is perfect. I also forgot to mention that you were able to earn that degree, and even though you were very nervous to go and get your diploma in front of all those people, you did it and you looked beautiful doing it. I'm still so proud of you for choosing to go into that program. Even though it wasn't what you wanted it to be and you weren't able to connect to your classmates, you did your best. I'm thankful for the work you put into it because it has propelled you forwards. Because of your work, you don't even have to take another math class because your degree credits transferred. You did so much with so little. Looking back at it, college isn't what you expected it would be. In the moment it was fun, but as for what the future held? Even better. Sometimes the hardest parts are looking back, but this time you don't need to do so. Keep that gaze on the horizon sure, but also keep it on the present. Prepare for the good things that are headed our way. We can do this.
