Introduction to our characters Liam & Rora!
Liam Pierce may have failed at many things in his life, but one thing he knew he would never fail to do was get his name right next to the shiny first-place spot on the class rankings poster every year. It wasn't his fault that he was such a good Algebra 2 teacher; after all, he wasn't doing anything extraordinary. Anyone could do it, really, or at least that's what he told all the envious teachers around him after his fifth year winning in a row. True, it wasn't exactly a real competition, but what was the school thinking when they not only did student class rankings but also teacher class rankings? They just created the most competitive school in all of existence and pretended it wasn't their fault.
Rora knew her musical addiction was too much. When she entered the teacher's break room that morning, she nearly had a heart attack seeing the entire faculty looking at her with wide eyes, and her mind went directly to the worst. If she lost her job because, instead of checking her email that morning, she decided to belt "Great Expectations" in her car, she would cease to watch musicals for the rest of her life. Thankfully, she didn't miss anything important, and she could continue listening to her favorite songs in the car (after checking her email). When she first joined the school, Audrey, her new teacher and best friend, told her that this school took rankings and education very seriously, but she didn't think it was that serious. Like, have a gathering thirty minutes early just to ogle at a person's name for the entire time, seriously.
