I was going through some Urdu poetry on Quora and I found an English translation of a great couplet by Mirza A.K Ghalib. Here's the Urdu (Roman) and its English translation.
Buss ke dushwaar hay har kaam ka asaa hona,
Aadmi ko mayassar nahi insaa hona.
Tia difficult that every goal be easily complete,
For a man too, to be human, is no easy feat.
(A lot of the finer points of these Urdu poems get lost in these translations, one that incompetent me can notice is the translation of "Aadmi" to "A man". Because Aadmi can be a man or a woman, an "Aadmi" is simply a child of Adam, man or woman. And at least to me, reading the translation after the real thing really makes the translation such a disaster, even considering that this translation is a good one. But for part of a poem to be translated and still be amazing is something respectable. This is one of the best couplets he wrote for sure.)
