The ride was quiet. The train rumbled along its tracks, and no other sudden passengers joined at some obscure, forgotten station. He felt Dream drift off first, his breathing falling into a regular, steady pace. The others in their compartment fell asleep not too long after, picked up and plucked away one at a time. Soon he was the only one left awake, his heart beating loud in his ears in the silence that followed.
In the quiet, his mind turned to George. George, who had done nothing except for being born with an ability he’d never asked for. George, who had only wanted a normal life. He should have lived a long, fulfilling life, not choking on his own blood as an assassin stood over his dying body.
The pain took a moment to register. Sapnap glanced down. His hands had closed into fists, his nails digging round crescents into the soft flesh of his palms. Slowly he relaxed, carefully rubbing the circulation back into his hands.
It shouldn’t have been George.
