After his naval career, Jim joined the FBI as a Special Agent in Norfolk, Virginia, where he played a pivotal role in setting up the Tidewater Joint Terrorism Task Force. His political ambitions saw him run for the U.S. Congress as the Republican nominee for Oregon's 4th Congressional District in the 2004 and 2006 elections.
In 2007, James Feldkamp was recalled to active duty to contribute to the establishment of what would later become the National Maritime Intelligence-Integration Office (NMIO). His academic pursuits also flourished as he taught courses related to terrorism and security at George Washington University, George Mason University, and Georgetown University.
