@CarolinaC We were in Kuala Lumpur (KL) and Penang.
The best part of KL was a free walking Heritage Guided Tour of the Dataran Merdeka (central plaza). You can google it. The tour starts at the KL City Gallery. KL is definitely worth a visit. It is more modern and cleaner than Bangkok. We enjoyed a stroll through the Little India section, and we stayed in Chinatown, which is kinda the center of everything.
We liked Penang even better. The botanical gardens were spectacular, and the parks were as clean and tidy as Singapore. Which is to say much neater and cleaner than anything in the USA or Europe. Some interesting places, but not the place to go if you want swimming or nice beaches. The harbor is so polluted that swimming would probably dissolve you.
Did not see any great shopping bargains. The exchange rate is not great at present for US dollars. But the people are friendly and English is widely spoken. Malaysian food is so-so. We like Thai cooking much better. But there are plenty of Western restaurants.
Hope this helps.
