The original PLANET OF THE APES (1968) amazes me every time that I watch it. The dialogue and the acting remain interesting and entertaining. I absolutely love Roddy McDowall as "Cornelius" and Charlton Heston as "Taylor." Despite the lack of CGI special effects, and the often clumsy and fake ape costumes, the film remains superior to the remakes. In fact, the original film lacked an epic "save the world" battle scene that seems to be a required element for many modern science-fiction films. The end might seem anticlimactic for some modern viewers, but I love it for that very reason. It is not about saving the world. It is the type of story that Frank Herbert spoke about when he said, "The function of science fiction is not always to predict the future, but sometimes to prevent it."
