The small, dimly lit room forced us uncomfortably close, with Irvin Sinclair practically glued to my side. I could feel his presence—too much of it. His breath was warm against my ear, and I could already sense that insufferable grin on his face.
"Always seem to find ourselves in these situations, don’t we?" His voice was smooth, almost teasing.
I kept my eyes forward, my tone cold. "More like you keep getting in my way."
He chuckled softly, leaning in just a little closer. "Or maybe you just can’t stay away from me."
I shot him a sharp look. "Trust me, if I had the choice, you’d be the last person I’d be stuck with."
His smile widened, unbothered. "Come on, Evenne. Admit it—being this close isn’t so bad."
I scoffed, refusing to give him the satisfaction. "The only bad thing here is your delusion."
"Harsh," he murmured, his voice low. "But I do love a challenge."
I glanced up at him, unimpressed. "You wouldn’t know what to do if I gave you one."
Irvin’s grin only deepened. "Try me."
