Kai-is-Dying

Over the course of a few days the two resident teenagers had gotten quite close, it seemed. This pleased Bruce, as he was worried about Kai fitting in.

However, two of his other sons didn't seem quite so happy...

"Admit it, you're only here to spy on us and relay information back to your 'dear ol' daddy'," Jason, the second oldest, loomed over the boy 7 years younger than him, hoping to intimidate him into leaving the Manor.

The boy, on the other hand, only stood his ground with his arms crossed and a disinterested expression crossing his features. Yes, he could defend himself, but he didn't feel the need to. Not that the man would care anyway.

Jason narrowed his eyes even further and frowned as much as he could. "Why don't you just say something, dang it?! You've been as quiet as a mouse ever since you got here. I don't think I've seen you speak once! You think you're better than us, is that it?"

But those deep green eyes only stared further into Jason's soul, not a peep coming from his thin lips.

"UGH FINE, YOU WIN. But don't think I'm gonna forget about you. I //will// be keeping my eyes on you until you leave, and, trust me, you will." Leaving on that aggressive note, the young man finally walked away in a fit of anger.

Kai watched his new friend's brother run off and looked to the ground. It's not like he //wanted// to stay, he just didn't have much of a choice. He had already found a way out, problem was that Tim made him promise he wouldn't leave until The Joker was caught. And he didn't break his promises, whether he wanted to make them or not.

Kai stared at his chipping green nails, wondering if Dick was gonna make him redo them. He decided he liked doing his nails, it was fun, but it was also really awkward with his friend, friend's brother, and friend's brother's girlfriend leaning over him. Like, seriously, why can't he just do them in peace??

And then there was the situation with Mr. Wayne's biological son. He was avoiding Kai's existence as much as he could, which was awesome for Kai, but Mr. Wayne kept trying to push them to be friends. 'Ugh we're perfectly content ignoring each other, why does he have to butt in...'

"There you are, Kai!!" The boy in question looked up to see Tim and Dick walking towards him with big grins on their faces. To be honest, those smiles were scaring him.

'Great what are they up to now...?'

Much to Kai's dismay, Tim was able to convince him to follow him for breakfast.

As the boys traversed the winding hallways, they each had a whirlwind of thoughts bothering them. In fact, they almost got separated from each other because of said thoughts taking up their focus, causing Tim to force himself to be more aware of the boy relying on his guidance through the maze of a house.

'It'll be bad if he gets lost, Jason and/or Damian might find him and do something.'

Tim glanced back at his possible new brother, curious on what went on inside his head. The kid looked like his head was in a completely different place, somewhere only he could go to.

He looked sleepy, unable to pay attention to where they were going. 'He should be more careful, otherwise he really will get lost...'

"Um, I'm Tim, by the way, but you already knew that..."

Kai focused his eyes on Tim, already drawn from that imaginary place. "To be honest, I forgot.."

          "Oh, I guess that's fair."

Silence, once again. It wasn't deafening, just awkward. Tim felt the need to make it go away, but he didn't know what to say. He didn't think he deserved to make small talk after how he treated Kai. Not that the kid would say much back...

Still, that little voice inside his head insisted that not everything was how it seemed. That maybe he would talk, if given the patience and chance.

At closer observation, Tim realized that it wasn't just that Kai was aloof and closed off, he was also shy and lethargic. Or maybe that was just the sleepiness.

Whatever the case, it may be easier to get close to him than Tim had originally been thinking on his way to Kai's room.

As the boys arrived in the dining room Tim noticed that only Bruce remained in his seat. The other three were gone, probably left to train for their upcoming mission to capture The Joker.

Bruce looked up from his newspaper to greet them cheerfully, happy that his son did as he asked.

However, once he got a good look at his newest kidnappee, a concerned frown appeared on his face. He looked like he wanted to say something, but knew better than to ask about the kid's sleep. He didn't yet know how he would react, whether he would blow up or not.

So he decided to keep his mouth shut and forced a smile. "Good morning!"

Timothy Drake was disappointed in himself. Bruce was right, he did know better. But he let his emotions get the better of him, leading him to treat Kai terribly, even if only for that first day.

Kai hadn't eaten anything yesterday, either. It was late and Tim didn't care enough to push it. Or he just didn't care at all... The guy's just so quiet. It was easy to ignore his obvious hunger.

But he now sees that that was wrong. Who knows when the last time he had eaten was. He could've been starving for days...

It was clear that he was a street kid. The obvious malnourishment, scars, the way he held himself, and especially the way he looked around for all possible exits whenever he entered a room. He probably grew up on the streets of Gotham, fighting to survive... Like Jason. Maybe the two could get along if Jason set aside his hatrid for The Joker.

Tim arrived at the door of their guest's bedroom. He found it surprising that it was in the east wing, otherwise known as the family wing, when they had no idea whether Kai was truly trustworthy or not. Maybe Bruce just wanted him close, to keep an eye on him. (Spoiler alert, it was Alfred's decision. He didn't want Kai to be alone ( ꈍᴗꈍ)) whatever the case, he was here and needed to stop stalling.

The door creaked open and Tim instantly felt a light breeze. "Oh no. No. no, no, no, no, NO." He ran to the open window. "CRAP. Did he leave??" His chest tightened as he frantically searched the narrow ledge for signs of a small teenager making their escape. Something groaned from behind him.

Kai-is-Dying

"You think I'm that stupid as to try to leave as soon as I get here?" Tim whirled around, but didn't seen anything out of the ordinary. Where had the voice come from?

            "Umm, is that you, Kai?"

"....." A head popped up in the corner of his vision, causing Tim to look down, towards the bottom of the bed. "Hi."

"AHH!" The older boy shrieked, getting in a fighting stance. But as his eyes focused on the upside-down floating head, he realized it wasn't, in fact, floating, the rest of the body was just under the bed. "What are you doing under the bed??"

            Kai blinked. "I... Don't know."

Tim furrowed his eyebrows. "Okay... But why's the window open?"

The younger boy let the room go silent for a few moments before answering. "It's really stuffy in here."

Tim's eyebrows furrowed even more. 'Of course it's stuffy, you're under the bed!!' he thought, but kept it to himself. "Well, breakfast is ready. You should eat." He said. He didn't want this to go on any longer, it was already super awkward. However, Kai had decided he was done talking, and just stared into space.

Tim took the moment to study his face. He had dark bags under his eyes, and the area was quite puffy. 'Has he been crying?' the thought made him even more disappointed in himself. Tim vowed right then and there that he would do everything in his power to make Kai feel at home there, and try to convince Jason to be nice to him. If that was even possible.

Bruce stared at the seven empty seats. There were only supposed to be six. "Where is Kai?" he asked.

Dick, his eldest, paused, the fork layered in stabbed pancake centimeters away from his mouth. He looked around. "Oh, um... Did anyone tell him about breakfast?"

The other boys just ignored him and continued eating as if their guest wasn't missing.

Bruce sighed. "Tim, your plate is almost empty, can you please go get Kai, before his food goes cold?"

The teenager scowled. "But Bruucee I still have 2 more cups of coffee to drink!" he whined.

Bruce raised an eyebrow. "I think you've had enough coffee for the morning. And if you don't want to go talk to Kai, then you can say goodbye to coffee for the rest of the day."

Tim stiffened. "Fine..." however, as the coffee addict reluctantly stood up, his youngest brother threw an uncalled for apple at his head.

"HEY! WHAT THE HECK??" Tim cried as he just barely dodged the fruit. Damian smirked. Jason laughed. Dick spit out his milk. Bruce just sighed again.

"TT, you'll do anything for coffee, wouldn't you? Even making sure the enemy eats. You're so soft... No one wants to eat next to that guy." Damian said before Tim threw Dick's slightly peeled orange at him, much to Dick's dismay.

The room quickly devolved into chaos with walls painted in food and suits ruined, finally ending when Bruce slammed his fist on the table.

"ENOUGH." The boys went quiet. "Jason, I can understand your prejudice, but Tim? I thought you were better than this." Tim avoided his gaze.

"Kai has done nothing wrong. He didn't even know who his father was until yesterday. As such, I expect you all to treat him with kindness and respect.

On top of that, he just went through something really traumatic. He's probably hurting and does not deserve to be treated so horribly for something he can't control."

Kai-is-Dying

His boys stared at him. Dick cracked a smile. "Wow, Bruce, didn't know you had that in you!"

"TT. If you say so, Father, I guess I'll try."

"Um... I- I'm sorry.. I'll go get him." Tim stood up.

"There's no way in heck I'm gonna-" Dick put his hand over his little brother's mouth.

"Hush, Little Wing, we already know your answer and we don't wanna hear it."

The last thing Timothy heard as he left was Dick screaming 'HE BIT ME'.

Kai calmly closed the door behind him. His legs immediately felt all wobbly as he stood in front of the closed door, causing him to slowly let himself fall to the floor.

His vision blurred as stars danced across it, and his ears rung.

He choked on the bile rising in his throat. This wasn't what was supposed to happen. The police were going to rescue him from that horrible man and release him back into the streets, hopefully after a hot meal. He was supposed to just go back to surviving, only adding the extra trauma and undeniable information about who his 'father' was.

But the police never came. He should've known The Joker was too much for them, and that of course they were gonna call The Bat. And The Joker just had to make sure that Batman knew exactly why he kidnapped Kai. He wanted Kai to become like him. To fall into that terrifying vat of mystery goo, while The Bat watched. Cause what else would he do with a newly discovered kid?

Obviously Batman saved him, but he couldn't catch The Joker. So what does he do? He sends Kai to live with

Kai-is-Dying

His "good friend" Bruce Wayne, to keep him safe.

"Ughh what is wrong with that guy. I would've been fine if he just let me go back home."

Course, 'home' was just a crumbling abandoned shed but he certainly didn't need to know that.

Kai hated how powerless he felt here. How unwelcomed, despite never feeling welcomed anywhere in the first place. At least he could easily leave anywhere else, but this place was filled to the brim with state-of-the-art security. He couldn't even attempt to leave until he figured out where everything was and what everything did, otherwise he could make this whole situation a whole lot worse.

Still, he cried. And sobbed. And deliriously giggled for a while. Because no matter how fancy this place was, it was still a prison.

Kai laid on the couch, pretending not to notice the death glares he was getting from three of the other four boys in the room. The last one seemed contemplative, like he also wanted to glare, but couldn't find it within himself.

The same boy finally spoke up. "So... Your name's Kai, right?"

The boy in question stayed silent.

"Um, My name's Dick. And these are my brothers," the guy named 'Dick' pointed to the others as he said their names. "Damian, Tim, and Ja-" he was interrupted by the one yet to be introduced.

"So tell me... How well do you know that as*hole?" The guy spoke with such animosity that Kai almost felt like he had done something horrible to offend him.

Still, he kept quiet. He had no obligation to talk to the people that had already decided to hate him.

"Jay, we've been over this." Dick said when he realized the kid wasn't going to reply.

"Shut up, dickhead! We're letting this guy into our home! What was Bruce thinking?!"

"Hey, I know how hard this is on you. But he's just a kid, barely 14!"

Kai frowned. It wasn't that he was barely 14, he was just 1/12 the way to 15.

"So?? Look at the demon! He's a monster of an eleven year old."
